01

Listen

Choose a pressing and drop the needle. Begin with a low output level.

02

Etch

Place dust or draw a scratch. The mint ring marks the groove currently read by the needle.

03

Compare

Treat removable contamination, then compare A/B. Permanent scratches and wear remain.

THE LOST PRESSINGS / FOUR POSSIBLE PASTS

Every pressing has a past.

Begin with a record from the archive. Four creative interpretations of equipment, materials, and the ways we care for them.

Creative models, not historical measurements. An older record is not necessarily a noisier record.

EXPERIMENT 01 / LISTEN CLOSELY

Anatomy of a crackle

Waveforms below illustrate each sound’s character. The scope under the turntable shows the actual output. Return to the full mix after solo listening.

01 / SIGNAL CHARACTER

Surface hiss

Continuous fine surface noise.

02 / SIGNAL CHARACTER

Micro crackle

Tiny, irregular dust impulses.

03 / SIGNAL CHARACTER

Clicks & pops

Short, distinct impact sounds.

04 / SIGNAL CHARACTER

Motor rumble

Low-frequency mechanical vibration.

05 / SIGNAL CHARACTER

Wow & flutter

Slow and fast pitch instability. Load music to hear it.

06 / SIGNAL CHARACTER

Electrical hum

A steady mains-frequency tone.

EXPERIMENT 02 / TIME & TOUCH

The Aging Machine

Years do not equal damage. Explore a fictional handling and storage scenario, from a carefully kept record to a heavily used pressing.

A creative condition model, not a calendar.

EXPERIMENT 03 / WHAT REMAINS

The Restoration Bench

Cleaning can remove loose contamination. It cannot undo a permanent scratch or rebuild a worn groove. Compare the same seeded noise at the same playback position.

Noise Detective

FIELD NOTES / THE SCIENCE OF VINYL NOISE

The science of imperfection.

GROOVE ATLAS is an independent interactive sound experiment. The engine synthesizes noise and maps drawn defects to a selected circular groove. It is a simplified teaching model, not a physically exact spiral-groove simulator. Era presets are creative interpretations, not historical measurements. No music samples are bundled. The optional demo chord is synthesized locally. Noise is seeded for repeatability; it is not a recording of a particular record.

Why does vinyl crackle?

Loose contamination and surface defects can disturb stylus motion, producing short impulses. Continuous hiss, low-frequency rumble and electrical hum have different causes and should be adjusted separately.

Will cleaning remove every click?

No. This experiment reduces removable dust and static-related noise. Permanent scratches and groove wear remain. The buttons model relative changes; they are not instructions for a real cleaning product.

What are wow and flutter?

Slow and fast playback-speed variations modulate pitch. Load an audio file to hear this clearly; noise alone has no stable musical pitch.

Can I reproduce my record?

Save the JSON project to preserve the seed, controls, defect positions, cleaning state and RPM. Import the same audio file separately. Choose a 12, 30, or 60-second WAV. Live playback loops six revolutions at the selected RPM and uses the beginning of your imported audio.
